Located in of DeKalb County, Georgia, the City of Decatur serves as the county seat. As of 2010, this community was home to nearly 20,000 residents, although many people assume the city is larger since several other zip codes for unincorporated DeKalb County communities also bear the name Decatur. This city is an in-town Atlanta suburb, and it is served by several MARTA rail stations for public transportation.

Education is an important part of life in Decatur. The Decatur City School District serves the community, and while there are five elementary schools, all older students attend Decatur High School. For higher education, several opportunities reside in the Decatur city limits, such as Agnes Scott College, Georgia Perimeter College, and the Columbia Theological Seminary. Emory University is also located just northwest of the city in an unincorporated portion of DeKalb County.

There are several points of interested located in Decatur, as the residential neighborhoods and downtown area have several historical structures. The Old DeKalb County Courthouse is situated in Decatur Square, and it features a small historical museum. The MAK Historic District is home to a variety of early 20th Century American homes, and the Old Scottish Rite Hospital has been converted to house restaurants and a unique art gallery. Other attractions in Decatur include the Fernbank Science Center and the Michael C. Carlos Museum.

Decatur has a humid subtropical climate that features four seasons and ample precipitation throughout the year. Summers are hot and humid, and high temperatures reach at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit more than 40 days out of the season. Likewise, extreme weather can also be experienced during the winter, as nearly 50 days of the season will feature freezing conditions.
